Teaching Philosophy:
One of my favorite things about teaching in the field of communication is that students don’t have to wait for the opportunity to apply and practice their knowledge and skills. In an introductory communication course this translates into the expectation that students will practice speaking skills each day in class rather than only on “speech days.” In an upper-level communication course I emphasize theory application through discussion, activities, and assignments that incorporate students’ real-life experiences and make theory meaningful. Enthusiasm is contagious, and as I demonstrate my passion for communication my role shifts between teacher, facilitator, and at times cheerleader to generate momentum and lay the foundation for student success.
In addition to my full mental focus, I bring my whole heart into my role as a faculty member. I care deeply for our Bears and am committed to helping them succeed throughout their time at Baylor and beyond. In the classroom I adopt a student-centered, objective-driven approach in which I prioritize student goals and long-term learning outcomes. Each student is a unique and multifaceted individual, and I strive to intentionally create an engaging and collaborative environment in which students can learn from each other as they learn from me.

Research Interests:
As Christ followers we are called to love God and love others, and this translates into my life’s mission to develop meaningful relationships and help others do the same. In a technologically connected world, now more than ever it is important for communication scholars to understand how individuals progress into and determine they are in a relationship with each other. My faith drives my desire to understand how communication prompts relationships that improve individuals’ wellbeing and fulfill our need for meaningful connection.
My current projects focus on the role of communication in romantic relationship development. Specifically, how romantic partners or potential romantic partners use relationship talk to manage uncertainty and negotiate commitment. Other recent projects examine relationship development in adult parent-child relationships and patient-provider contexts. My goal is to grow our understanding of how romantic relationships are initiated and developed, and how individual and relational goals and experiences shape relational communication and outcomes
Family, Outside Hobbies, and Interests:
As the sign in my office says, I aim to collect moments not things, so I spend as much time as possible with those I love! With most of our extended family residing in San Antonio, here in Waco you will likely find me with my husband and best friend, Josef, and our four sweet kiddos. Together with our dog, Mozart aka “Mozzie” (who often serves as the unofficial TA in my online courses), we enjoy being active outdoors and in, reading all sorts of fiction, enjoying the fine arts, including food in every activity, making up songs about everything, and laughing…a lot.
What is the best thing about being a Baylor Bear?
Every time I step foot on Baylor’s campus I feel at home! I remember feeling so ready to be a Bear…when I was in the 7th grade. Since then, I have had the opportunity to experience how special this university is from the perspective of a little sister, undergraduate & graduate student, and now faculty member. From academics to athletics, it is evident there is a heart and soul to this community that is unlike any other place on earth. I am beyond blessed to teach, research, and serve at a university with such an inspiring mission and exceptional students. Sic ‘em Bears!.
