Teaching Philosophy

Education is a privilege that requires a lifelong commitment to learning—one that extends far beyond the classroom and traditional, rote instruction. For me, teaching and learning are soul work, requiring the active engagement of the whole person. I believe that self-reflexivity, critical thinking, and the application of practical theory are essential to preparing students for success in every area of life.

Learning should be challenging, liberating, and transformative, shaped through dialogue and dialectical thinking. I strive to create a classroom community rooted in inclusivity, mindful inquiry, and what I call Brain 3.0 mental mapping—a deeper, more intentional way of understanding the world. These tools help students retool their thinking and enter their chosen vocations with self-awareness, humility, and cultural intelligence.

Through teaching modalities such as active learning, problem-based learning, real-world application, and autoethnographic creativity, I aim to equip students to become ethical, purpose-driven communicators. I believe true global impact is possible when students are trained to see and be seen—sawubona—as they engage the world with empathy, vision, and integrity.

Family, Outside Hobbies, and Interests

Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband, Rodrick, and our two beautiful children, Zion and Reyna. As a family, we love RVing, exploring historical sites, attending cultural events, taking car trips to nowhere, and simply relaxing at home.

Personally, I’m passionate about maintaining a healthy life rhythm, journaling, binge-watching series on Netflix and Hulu, and fellowshipping with friends.

My faith is an integral part of who I am. I serve as a Fine Arts leader in the youth ministry at my church and find joy in being an itinerant speaker for women’s organizations. I am also currently pursuing my Christian life coaching certification and will graduate in September 2025. I have a deep heart for supporting women in their spiritual growth and helping them walk boldly in their God-given purpose through prayer groups, Bible study, and coaching.

I’m also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, where I advocate for mental health awareness and work to destigmatize mental health challenges in communities of color. Promoting healing, emotional wellness, and open dialogue in underserved populations is a calling I take seriously.

In addition, I am deeply committed to the professional development of women of color in higher education. I currently serve as Vice President of the Virtual Chapter of the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE), where I help create spaces for support, networking, and advancement for Black women across the academic landscape.

What is the best thing about being a Baylor Bear?

The people! Many of my colleagues have become friends who are now family. We care about each other and walk through life together. When you are a part of a tremendous network of believers who intercede for you in prayer and demonstrate Christ's love in all seasons of life, it makes it easier to teach and serve students from a place of overflow. My students are also incredible! I love connecting with and learning from them. Their passion for learning and seeking truth and commitment to excellence give me life! Also, I love the privilege I have to openly integrate my faith in the coursework that I teach! Where else can you speak about the goodness of God and seek His call through communication across contexts than at Baylor? Hallelujah! It is great to be a bear!
