Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is that we learn best from both the environment around us and others around us. My goal is to present communication in a way that is informative and challenging causing students to look for examples of what we’ve discussed that week in the classroom outside the “real world". I hope to accomplish this by presenting present day examples of communication through presentations, social media activities, discussion, and class activities. I am also a firm believer in the "learning through action approach". One of my professors in undergraduate work helped me understand what conflict looked like by going through a negotiation. It is my hope that students understand that behind every assignment I assign that there is a purpose and an end goal.
Research Interests
My research focuses on the intersection of Communication and Sport. In the past, I've studied conflict among teams, uses and gratifications in video game play, and issues related to NIL. Currently, I examine how we communicate what it means to be a fan of an organization, team, or even an individual player or “fandom”. Sometimes it’s done through wearing a jersey or hat, sometimes through basking in the reflected glory of a win, and sometimes through active rituals during a game. Other areas of my research include leadership, social media use, and conflict resolution in small groups.
Family, Outside Hobbies, and Interests
Outside of the classroom, I love to spend time with my wife (Ali), our daughter, and our dog (Papí). I also love watching movies, fly-fishing, hunting, watching Red Sox games, and woodworking. We are both very active in our church, Calvary Baptist Church. We love to travel and you can catch me supporting various Baylor sports teams throughout the year!
What is the best thing about being a Baylor Bear?
Absolutely everything! I love that Baylor offers all the benefits of a larger school, packaged in a smaller, close-knit community. From faculty and staff who care about mentoring students as much as scholarship, to a beautiful campus and world-class athletics, Baylor is the place to be!
